Standard 3: Assesses Student Learning
Rubrics are designed for multiple reasons. They allow students to make sure their assignment properly and fully fulfills all of the requirements of the teacher. Rubrics also allow the teacher a fair way of grading every students' assignment as fair as possible. At the end of the third quarter, students were given a biography assignment. They had to creatively complete a poster along with writing an essay about their specific person's life. As they worked in partners, they focused on the Biography Rubric. This rubric allowed the students to structure their essay in a logical way, making sure to answer the specific questions under each section.
When my students began the school year, they read a short Greek myth in their literature books. Since this was one of the first essays they ever wrote, the Origin Rubric is very basic and simple to follow. Comparing their Origin of the Seasons rubric to their biography rubric, one can notice that these 7th graders have made huge strides in their writing expectations and abilities. The Origin rubric is a basic format for students to feel more comfortable writing, yet still fulfilling the requirements of the assignment.
Before testing on grammar material, introductions to concepts worksheets, and a Grammar Test Review is given to the students. We spend a lot of class time working through examples, allowing time for questions, and practicing understanding concepts. This particular review was given right before a review grammar test was taken. This combines subject, verb, preposition, and appositive recognition. We spent time in class reviewing for the test and discussing the correct answers. This review was not for a grade, but was an example of assessing students based on class discussion.
